Advising FAQ for Students Starting Prior to Summer 2023

For nearly all students the answer is yes. Some majors prescribe some portion of the GWS requirement (e.g. a specific version of ENGL 202). Many majors do not prescribe these courses, but there are no other GWS courses available to satisfy the GWS requirement. There are some exceptions. The most common exception is that some students, including SHC scholars at UP, typically take ENGL/CAS 137 and ENGL/CAS 138 to complete 6 credits of GWS requirement and ENGL 15 and CAS 100 requirements in major which those are prescribed.

Yes, a student can take two Inter-Domain courses that have the same domain combination (GA/GS in the above example). But no domain can be completed with only Inter-Domain courses. So, if a student takes two GA/GS courses, the student still needs a single domain GA and a single domain GS to complete the requirement for each domain.

Yes, if a student takes a GHW/GN, they still need 3 credits of single-domain GHW coursework.

University policy (82-20) states that students who re-enroll are subject to the General Education requirements of their new enrollment date. But, students who are advanced in their coursework under the old program requirements may request to move back to the previous requirements. Academic units are encouraged to consider allowing re-enrolled students to opt into the old General Education program for the next two years (until Summer 2020).

The process for requesting a change of General Education year should follow the normal curricular petition process, as determined by the student's college and will be reviewed by those who routinely approve General Education substitutions for each academic unit.

Yes, but transfer students who are advanced in their coursework (typically around 50-60 credits or more complete) may request to move back to the previous requirements. Academic units are encouraged to consider allowing transfer students to opt into the old General Education program for the next two years (until Summer 2020).

To complete the GN requirement, a student must complete 3 single-domain credits/units.

The GN requirement includes:

  • 3 GN only or single-domain units/credits and
  • 6 more units/credit from either other GN single-domain course(s) or inter-domain course(s) with GN.

If a student selects and is approved to use the Move 3 substitution to reduce GN, then instead of 6 more units it is 3 more units. A student may not apply both a foreign language sub and Move 3 sub to GN. The absolute minimum of GN units a student may complete is 3 GN only or single domain units/credits and 3 more units/credit from either other GN single-domain course(s) or inter-domain course(s) with GN.
