General Education Advising FAQ

Question:
I ran a “What if” report/Degree Audit and it is displaying the wrong General Education requirements. Why?

Answer:
The new Gen Ed requirements are in effect for students starting or re-enrolling Summer 2018 and later. The Program Requirement Term is what determines General Education requirements, and if this term is set to Summer 2018 (2185) or later the new requirements will display. This term should not change when a student changes major.

The What-If Report request page provides an explanation of all Requirement Terms toward the top of this page. Some Re-enrollment and Transfer students may request permission to change their Program Requirement Term to a term prior to Summer 2018 (2185.

Career Requirement Term:
Typically the year a student enters the university. Relates to Career-level requirements such as Residency and Entrance Requirements.

Program Requirement Term:
Typically the year a student enters the university. Relates to General Education requirements.

Plan Requirement Term:
Typically the year a student enters their Plan/Subplan. Relates to Major/Option, Minor and Certificate requirements.

Question:
Inter-domain courses have suffixes (letter after the number), what do they all mean?

Answer:
Suffixes are used on Integrative Studies courses. Linked courses have a “Z” as in HDFS 210Z. For inter-domain courses, it is “N” normally, such as METEO 133N. Sometimes it is “Q”, such as CMLIT 183Q. “Q” indicates both inter-domain and honors. Special topics courses will use suffixes “A”- “K”. The specific letter references a specific combination of domains as listed in the table below.

Q: How do AP Seminar and AP Research credit apply to General Education requirements?

A: AP Seminar – a score of 3 or greater earns 3 credits of GENED 97N. This will meet three credits of Integrative Studies via the Inter-domain attribute, but no specific domains are assigned due to the variability of each student’s project. The student should submit request via petition based on details of their project if they want/need domain credit.

AP Research – score of 3 or greater earns 3 credits of GENED 197. No GenEd attributes are assigned and the student should submit request via petition based on details of their specific work product/thesis.
